How To Become A Volunteer
Thank you for your interest in our upcoming
palliative care training program. If you are interested in
becoming a palliative care volunteer, then we would encourage
you to download the volunteer application forms and reference
questions forms.
All Hospice Northwest volunteers are trained in a
36-hour program that is mandated by our provincial association.
The training program runs on weekly basis (3-hours per week),
for twelve consecutive weeks. At this time, we have not yet
determined which day of the week the training will run, but it
would most likely be either a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night.
The training is specific to your needs as a palliative care
volunteer; the objective is to equip you to be a comforting
presence with a person who is terminally ill, and/or with their
family members or caregivers.
The application process is as follows: please complete
the agency's volunteer application forms, and distribute the
reference question forms to two individuals who are not related to
you, but have known you for two years or more. Your references
are to fill them out confidentially, and then they will seal them
in an envelope, before giving them back to you. Please send in
your application form as soon as possible, as then we will
schedule a volunteer interview time with you. The two reference
forms can be brought with you to your volunteer interview.
A background check is also required and can be
obtained from your community police department. Please note
that this process can be lengthy and that we ask that all
volunteers have their background check before contacting clients
and family members.
