One-to-One Palliative Care Support Program

Palliative Care Volunteers are matched with a client on a one-to-one basis. The volunteer's role is to be a supportive companion and to help in whatever way he or she can at a difficult time. The service is directed by the client and varies according to the client's specific need. Volunteers are unique in the interdisciplinary team because they work exclusively for the clients. The volunteers remain constant in the teams of caregivers and will visit in homes, hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The role of the volunteer is to:

  • offer active listening and non-judgmental acceptance of the client's jouney
  • advocate for optimal care
  • assist the individual and family to achieve meaning and satisfaction at this difficult time
  • relieve caregivers
  • complement the role of family members
  • provide practical assistance, with things like shopping, making phone calls or writing letters, getting to appointments and outings in the community
  • offer diversional activities such as reading, music and playing cards
  • provide bedside support
  • and, at all times, observe confidentiality.

A referral for volunteer visiting can be made by anyone, providing the client is in agreement.

All Hospice Northwest programs and services are available with no fee.
